CBIIT has mandated that we upgrade our developer VMs to Windows Server 2016 (up from the current version of Server 2009). I have done some of the proof-of-concept work already.
One wrinkle is that CBIIT has changed their policy, and we are now told that we can only log into our DEV VMs using our AA accounts. This will introduce some significant challenges, as those accounts are not allowed to use a web browser, so (for example) it will be interesting to figure out how to test launching the web browser from XMetaL, something we support and our users do all the time. We are also told that Microsoft Office cannot be used from the DEV VMs, which would significantly hamper Volker's work to support the MS Word macros he maintains.
Similar restrictions are also being imposed on the lower-tier CDR servers which will replace our existing Server 2009 CDR servers when we upgrade them to Server 2016. This will also present challenges, though not as insurmountable as the restrictions on the DEV VMs.
I will propose that CBIIT create two additional VMs, running Windows 10 Professional, which Volker and I will use to do our client-side development and testing.
~volker: here's my start at a checklist of things remaining to be done before we can close this ticket. Please feel free to suggest additions.
install Office365 on the Windows 10 VMs
You have likely already done this: I need to setup Python to allow me running reports/filter install/etc. from my VM.
You've created the Collaborate page for setting up the server and I followed that page for setting up portions of my VM. Wondering if it makes sense to have a separate page for the VM setup as well. I'll be happy to start it if you think it's useful.
Not a bad idea, thanks!]
As far as I understand, CBIIT has done everything we need them to (not the same thing as "everything we asked them to do" – Box isn't working, for example, but we can live without that, just with a little more pain).
