We would like to discuss the possibility of incorporating non-PubMed citations in the EBMS. We would likely have to set up a page to manually create the citation (as we do in the CDR). We currently have approximately 12 non-PubMed citations across all of the Boards each year that would need to be tracked this way, so it would be good to get an idea of the LOE before we set a priority for this.
The EBMS has become more dependent on the assumption that the source of the articles is PubMed, so the level of effort to support non-PubMed articles has increased.
Question: How many non-pubmed citations are currently being reviewed by the editorial boards?
If we have seen a significant increase in the number of non-pubmed citations reviewed by the editorial boards since this was first reported in 2013 and can establish a need to proceed, below are a few ideas and considerations to help determine LOE.
Users would need a new “Add a Non-PubMed Citation” page with a form to fill out:
Basic bibliographic info (author, title, pub date, etc.)
Identify citation type (journal, book, website, etc.)
Maybe paste in an abstract
Link to full text or other url
Assign board, summary topics, review cycle (default to current or select?)
These citations would not be coming through the usual monthly literature surveillance process and would need to bypass the medical librarian review as well as probably the BM abstract review (similar to how we currently handle fast tracked citations). All other post-publication decisions would probably be the same as pubmed citations.
These citations would also need their own tag, maybe “non-pubmed citation” so that they can be identified/retrieved separately.
Also, NOT journal filters would not apply to these citations.
We would also want to consider a QC process for these citations. This could include a report that Bonnie or one of the Librarians runs periodically to double check the bibliographic info, an option to edit/update the record, and mark it somehow as verified.
