We’d like to suggest ways to enhance the Genetics Directory application on cancer.gov that will greatly help us when processing new applications. I will later add document(s) that outline the suggested changes. I am assigning it a Priority of P6 since the application is currently offline.

Isn't this issue a duplicate of OCECDR-3241?

No it's not. OCECDR-3241 is for the Dictionary and this bug is for the Directory.

I have attached a markup up copy of the application indicating the
suggested changes. I am also adding below the reason for suggesting
these changes or stating the problem with the current application:
Because the NCI Cancer Genetics Services Directory application is not properly aligned with the Genetics Professional (PersonGP) schema in the CDR, processing an application becomes difficult and time consuming when the applicant fails to provide the correct information or fails to provide complete information. The processing specialist often has to make judgment calls based on incomplete information. Processing incomplete applications becomes even more difficult when applicants fail to supply information that is required by the CDR schema to successfully validate the record. This is sometimes followed by long email exchanges between the applicant and the processing specialist to collect the missing information.

I think this is mainly a Cancer.gov issue. I am going to put in a Sharepoint OCE Works request to have the application form restored to Cancer.gov, with these changes incorporated.

I put in these changes in the request I made to Cancer.gov to repost the application form, with the exception of the changes proposed for the syndromes list. I am not sure why those changes were proposed. It looks like term names were substituted for the menu information for the syndromes, and we don't want to do that.

We probably missed the mapping so I will wait for the application to be up on cancer.gov to confirm what we wanted to do but generally, when we receive a new application, the syndromes that show up in the application email we receive have the following syndromes (not the entire list):
Adenomatous polyposis
Breast/ovarian (BRCA1)
Breast/other (BRCA2)
Colon (HNPCC)
Melanoma
Pancreatic cancer, familial
Prostate cancer, familial
We use a spreadsheet that has the mapping of the syndromes and terms to assign the following (corresponding) syndromes in the CDR in the GP's record:
familial adenomatous polyposis
hereditary breast/ovarian cancer - BRCA1
hereditary breast/ovarian cancer - BRCA2
hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer
hereditary multiple melanoma
hereditary pancreatic cancer
hereditary prostate cancer
We would want to avoid the use of the spreadsheet since it is a tedious process that is prone to errors. What we are proposing is, having the syndromes that we select in the CDR on the application so that we don't have to look up the mapping from the spreadsheet.

The names you see on the Application form and on the mailers come from the Menu Information in the cdr term record. For example, for the cdr term "hereditary pancreatic cancer", the Genetic Syndrome menu information is:
<MenuType>Genetics
Professionals--GeneticSyndrome</MenuType>
<DisplayName>Pancreatic cancer,familial</DisplayName>
<MenuStatus>Online</MenuStatus>
<EnteredBy>mbarnstead</EnteredBy>
<EntryDate>2009-09-15</EntryDate>
The display name is "Pancreatic cancer, familial", so that is what is shown on the mailer and on the application. Maybe there is something that we can do to help with the "mapping" of the display name to the term name when you are entering the data into the CDR, but I don't want to go to using the term name on the application form. Also, if we ever go to having a more dynamic application form, we might be able to address this.

Sounds good to me. Thanks!

We have started receiving new applications but it seems that the required elements are not being enforced as we expected. We continue to receive applications with missing information. Some of the applications are missing the following information:
Degrees
Syndromes
Do you currently treat patients?
Do you accept calls?

That's because I told Emile that we didn't need to finish the field verification before the application form went live. I will check with him and see when it will be done. That was never really part of the request I put in to have the form restored and we never had any discussions about it, so I was surprised that they were doing that.

Margaret,
Judy tested the application and confirmed that the Select All check box
doesn't work as it should. When the box is checked, it doesn't select
all the syndromes and when the application is submitted, no syndrome
selection is included in the data we receive to process the
application.
