We would like to be able to have footnotes in the DIS and the cancer information summaries. An example of how this would be used in in the DIS Pembrolizumab where certain indications link to the following note: ¹This use is approved under FDA’s Accelerated Approval Program. As a condition of approval, confirmatory trial(s) must show that pembrolizumab provides a clinical benefit in these patients.
This is currently just being done using a superscript 1 and then adding the note at the end of the text. We would like to be able to have the number link to the note, and possibly have the note show if one hovers over the number. We need to be able to distinguish the number from superscripts and references numbers.
More discussion needed to flesh out requirements.
~duganal will consult with the IA folks to find out what footnotes already existing on the web site, and what handling options make sense.
We've decided to move this issue to the parking lot for now given that we are planning to conduct additional research on the audience and usability of DIS and we have an acceptable workaround for the time being.
I also wanted to add Amy's comments regarding the Cancer.gov team.
"I confirmed with the Cancer.gov team that programmatically-generated footnotes are not being used on Cancer.gov and are not part of the current design templates/UI. In order to implement footnotes as part of the Cancer.gov design, we would need to get a designer and IA involved for the UX and an interactive developer would need to update the code to implement them on the front end of Cancer.gov."
