Description

Sometimes, a space is missing either before or after a link in the summary. The link might be a glossary term ref or a summary fragment ref or a summary ref.

The space is present in the CDR and on the QC report, but when the QC report is printed directly from the browser window OR when the QC report is copied into Word, the space goes missing. This doesn't happen around all links - just some of them.

It doesn't appear to be related to the Word macro in any way since the space goes missing once the summary is copied into Word, even before the macro is run.

I will add some screenshots below to illustrate the problem.

Although this is a small thing, we often scroll through the summary documents and manually correct the problem (or get these types of corrections from Board members), so it does get to be time consuming.

I am trying to reproduce this issue and have a few questions:

  1. I'm assuming this issue is not coming up very frequently because I've looked at a few summary reports but did not see the problem. I've also run the report for your genetics summary inspecting the same area that you reported and used for your screenshots but I can't reproduce it. How often do you see this issue?

  2. Is this problem reproducible? This means when you do see the problem it shows up again at the same spot again and again or is it more or less random.

  3. You're talking about the problem showing up in Word but the first image attached is the screenshot of a PDF file. How was this PDF file created?

  4. Have you seen the issue with only one type of QC report (HP, patient, BU, RS) or with all of these?

Here are my somewhat unhelpful answers to your questions. I'm wondering if the problem could have been resolved by the upgrade to XMetaL 9, or by some other change to the browser. I haven't seen the problem in awhile, so I'm tempted to close this and reopen if it comes up again.

1. The problem was happening fairly regularly with some summaries but I haven't seen it in the past couple of months anyway.
2. I think it used to occur in the same places - I would routinely have to correct the spacing issue in the same sentences. Alas, it's no longer showing up in those usual places (this is a good thing!), so I am unable to reproduce it.
3. The PDF was generated by saving the Word file.
4. I know the problem was in the HP BU, and I think Victoria reported it in the HP RLSO report, but I will have to check with everyone else to see about the patient reports.

I have an e-mail out to everyone to see if they can provide any current examples of the problem. If not, we can close this.

Robin B is still experiencing the problem and has an example from a QC report she ran today that contains the problem. I'm uploading the document (see highlighted text on pages 21 and 22). She provided the following additional information.

  • She ran the HP B/U QC report to generate this report.

  • She used copy/paste to put the report in MS Word.

  • She ran her Word macro on this document.

Again, do you know if Robin B gets the same output (including the missing spaces) when she's running the same report?

She said it happens a lot but she isn't sure if it's 100% of the time. Maybe you could stop by her office and observe as she's runs the report to see when/where the problem comes in and/or gather any other information that could be helpful?

I'm attaching a new file with some examples from Diana. Here are her comments:

I ran the Drug Description QC report and copied it into a word document. In several, but not all, instances of the word ‘gene’, the space between it and the gene name was eliminated. It happened after BRAF and Kras, but not after ALK. And not always after BRAF. Go figure. See attached.

The only place where the space between BRAF and gene was not omitted is in text for a summary that has been made publishable, but has not been published on cgov. We just finished working on it this afternoon. You never know…might be key. The summary has been published before, but not with this new text.

We decided to take this out of Darwin. Seems like we could spend a lot of time trying to find a pattern to the problem and it isn't a high priority.

will take a look at this one, but it's not worth a lot of effort.

I was looking at this a little more re-reading the comments. If I understand it correctly we can already conclude that

  • The Word macros are not introducing the problem. The problem occurs regardless if the macros ran or not.

  • The QC reports - both, BU as well as R/Z - are showing the problem.

  • The problem doesn't appear in the browser (IE, I'm assuming) but only in PrintPreview for IE or after pasting the HTML into Word. Therefore it is likely the HTML conversion causing the problem.

For those users seeing this problem it might help to

  • identify which browser and browser version is used

  • identify which version of Word is used

  • is the document printed from Word or the browser

  • identify if the problem is reproducible with the identical document, i.e. no changes done at all.

I've seen some posts related to similar problems in Chrome or problems with Word for some specific fonts. These posts reported missing spaces around words but nothing mentioning missing spaces around links.

Another thing that might be helpful would be to right click inside the affect link in IE, select "Inspect" and post a screen shot of what comes up (see the example I just attached to this ticket).

I've done at least as much work on this as we agreed I'd invest, without much fruit. I suggest we close the ticket for now (or at least take it out of the sprint).

I'm putting this on hold and moving it to the backlog. The next time it happens we will try to record the information requested above.

Perhaps we should close this and reopen if that ever becomes appropriate in the future?
