Kristin,
We may be able to send them by e-mail in a zip file. Let me talk to our technical team. If we can do that, we should be able to get the summaries to you this week.
Best wishes,
Rick

Dear Dr. Manrow,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. September versions for the years
1990-2007 sound perfect. Thank you for also offering to send them
conveniently all on a CD (my address is below as you noted) – do you
think it’s possible they will arrive in the next week or so? If not, if
it’s at all possible to have soft copies sent via email, I would greatly
appreciate it. Thank you for clarifying that the documents are evidence
assessments – I will make sure that is properly noted in our
analysis.
Kind regards,
Kristin

Dear Kristin,
I will ask my colleagues to retrieve copies of the PDQ breast cancer treatment summary you requested. Will the September version of each year from 1990 to 2007 work for you? Or, would you prefer an earlier month? If I recall, we sent the earlier summary information to you on one or more CDs. Will that be O.K. again? If so, should we send them to the address given below?
Once again, I would like to remind you that PDQ summaries are evidence assessments, not treatment guidelines or recommendations.
Best wishes,
Rick

Subject: Old versions of PDQ treatment guidelines
Dear Dr. Manrow on behalf of the NCI,
I am working on a project for the Ottawa Health Research Institute at
the University of Ottawa that involves analyzing clinical practice
guidelines for the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer.
The principle investigators on the project are Drs. Jeremy Grimshaw and
Ian Graham and the project is sponsored by the Canadian Institute for
Health Research (CIHR).
I received your contact from a colleague who connected with you in 2004 to request earlier copies of PDQ’s for metastatic breast and lung cancers. We are currently doing a 2nd phase of this project, involving looking at guidelines/evidence summaries surrounding adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer. Because we are looking at how these summaries evolve over time, we need to go back to earlier versions of these documents that fall within our observed time period of 1990 and Sept 2007. We note that you update your summaries monthly, and that it would be too resource intensive to mine all the updates, and thus thought that perhaps if we could retrieve one per year on the same month 1990-2007, that would suffice.
The purpose of the project is to understand the transfer of knowledge from clinical trials to guideline setting and ultimately, to clinical practice in cancer care. We have no intention of reproducing or publishing the requested guidelines. They will be used solely for research purposes.
We are nearing the completion of the project and would like to incorporate this data, and would greatly appreciate if you could respond as soon as possible.
Thank-you very much for your assistance!
Kristin

The PDQ-C application which is storing the data from April 1994 to
2002 doesn't run anymore on our new 64bit machines.
I've installed a virtual machine running Windows XP which allows me to
extract the data for now.
John is trying to create a program that extracts all data from the PDQ-C for future use.
