The Spanish team has been asking for an increase in the character limit impossed on the Alt Title = Short attribute as it creates problems for them in certain translation cases and it also introduces a lot of inconsistencies. In the past, I understood that the problem was impossed by Percussion. Now that Percussion is out of the way, we would want to see if it is possible to increase the character limit or make exceptions in certain cases. It looks like the current limit is 60 characters. If it is possible to increase the limit, we would suggest a new character limit after looking at the data.
I confirmed that the short title is stored in the
browser_title
field in Drupal. Here’s what the UI says in
the CIS form on Drupal:
Browser title for the page. Site name is automatically appended (Browser Title - National Cancer Institute) [Displays in: internal and external search results, browser tabs, social media sharing, and when card title is blank. SEO best practice - 42 characters including spaces]
The field definition in Drupal has a maximum length limitation of 100 characters, and the CDR publishing subsystem imposes that limitation when it is posting a summary to the Drupal server. The CDR schemas implement a custom validation rule which enforces a limitation of 64 characters on the length (not the 60 characters cited above).
According to the SEO team,
our requirements align with Google character limits. Longer that the limit, and Google truncates the characters in results, which looks weird. There is likely a best practice from a content perspective as well.
Perhaps the short alternate title is being used for multiple
applications which have different needs/requirements/purposes. If so, it
may be that the best solution would involve using other elements and/or
attributes for storing those different titles.
