We have received the current Stedman's spellchecker. Could you please extract the file so that we can replacement them on the L:Drive?
In the past, we received a CD containing 3 *.lex files that needed to be copied. However, it appears that Stedman is making the process way more complicated these days.
During the installation process, there is a question if the dictionary is to be installed on a stand-alone system or as a network installation. I followed the path of a stand-alone installation. Please ensure that this was the correct path and we're using the correct license.
There is also a question regarding the word processor in use with two options being given. XMetaL is not one of them.
Following is a list of the steps taken to extract the *.lex file along with screenshots:
William copied the new "installation" file (a *.zip) file to the L-drive
I copied the file StedPlus2023_MU.zip to a local machine
C:\CDR\tmp
Extracting the content of the *.zip file to the directory
C:\CDR\tmp\StedPlus2023_MU
That directory contains a single *.exe file to run
Stedmans Plus 2023 Multi User Version.exe
Run that file with "Elavated Permissions" and click "Next" on the
first screen to start the installation
Accept the license agreement and click "Next"
Specify the "Type of Installation"
(I missed that screenshot) Stand-alone or network?
Specify the Word Processor used
(I picked MS Word)
This selection was followed by the question of the version of Word used (I picked Word365)
Specify if this is a stand-alone or network installation (I
already indicated "stand-alone" at the beginning, so that's what I
picked again here)
Specify the installation directory
(I accepted the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Stedmans
After this the single *.les file was extracted into the Program
Files directory
StedPlus2016S.lex
Next, we copy that extracted file to the network directory
L:\OCPL_Cross\CDR\Stedmans
I'm assuming that the content of the three former *.lex files
GENERIC.lex
STEDMANS.lex
TRADE.lex
are now combined into that single file "StedPlus2016S.lex"
Each user will have to remove the link to the old three dictionary files and replace those with the link to the new file. Please let me know if you need a reminder on how to link a dictionary.
Hint: Run the spellchecker and then select Options --> Main Word Lists ...
At the end there was a message regarding online registration. The user can go to
https://www.wolterskluwer.comen/know/stedmans/register
in order to register the software.
I got an error message when linking the single "StedPlus2016S.lex" so I assume XMetal 17 is still looking from the three well known files.
As discussed, since the installation did not include an option to use the dictionary file with XMetaL we did run the installation by picking the option for MS Word. Therefore I tried to add the dictionary file to Word but this failed as well with the following error message:
"Files without Unicode encoding can't be added to the dictionary list. Save the file as Unicode file to add it to the dictionary list."
I think our next step should be to contact Stedman's and ask if a dictionary installation file exists to be used with XMetaL since the current installation doesn't allow us to use the resulting *.LEX file with either XMetaL or Word.
Stedman's has agreed to provide us with the CSV file for Stedman's with a two-year license agreement. We've returned the signed agreement and should be in receipt of the file soon. I've asked Jennifer Devoll to send it to you, ~volker , when she receives it since I'll be on leave starting tomorrow.
I received the CSV file and will create the new dictionary file for XMetaL to use.
~oseipokuw , I created and copied the new Stedman's dictionary file (*.dic) to the "STEDMANS" network folder that also contains all of the older dictionary files. Please go ahead and attach this file in XMetaL to test. Let me know if you need a reminder on how to attach the file to XMetaL.
Note to myself:
Although it is not required for a *.dic spellcheck file, XMetaL won't recognize the entries if the first line of the *.dic file doesn't include the number of entries of the file.
Thanks ~volker I tested it and it seems to be working correctly.
