Bugzilla on verdi is taking an inordinate amount of time to post a message comment.

[email from Alan]

I added a comment to issue #5017 tonight.

Bugzilla behaved very strangely.

It took more than two minutes before returning to me.

I received an email from Bugzilla well before the program returned.

When it did return, it produced a blank screen.

The email I got was a copy of the next to last comment, not the comment I had just entered - though the correct comment and status change were in the issue when I went back to it in Bugzilla.

This doesn't look like a virtual machine problem to me. Maybe we have a configuration problem.

It has been, ever since the most recent reconstitution of verdi. I've added you and Volker to this issue.

Actually, if you look at the bottom of that email message, you'll see that comment as well. Bugzilla does that when it detects that it's about to send out a comment for an issue for which one or more previous comments haven't been sent out yet.

That makes sense. A feature, not a bug.

I'll time the response to this reply.

One minute and four seconds.

And 1:04 again. It's pretty consistent.

Volker/Alan:

Depending on how long it takes to troubleshoot this problem, you may get more email messages for the issues than you want. If it starts to bug you ("ha ha") just remove yourself from the CC list (Volker) or reassign the QA role to me (Alan).

This is a test with some configuration settings changed in Bugzilla.

Old settings:
mail_delivery_method=Sendmail
smtpserver=localhost

New settings:
mail_delivery_method=SMTP
smtpserver=mailfwd.nih.gov

Well! I think that did the trick. Unless someone can think of any drawbacks to my solution, I'm going to leave the settings with their new values.

Good sleuthing!

It's odd that using the SMTP server on verdi itself would be slower than using mailfwd. Mailfwd is subject to various problems and is sometimes very slow. But if it works, it works. I agree that we should leave it as you have done and not address the issue again unless and until we need to.

I'll see how long this comment takes to process.

Three seconds.

Looks like a winner.

I'll wait a week or so and if no problems appear, close the issue.
