There is a character limit imposed by the Gatekeeper for table titles. (255 characters). A summary recently failed publication due to a table title that exceeded this limit.

The validation software in the CDR does not currently check this when validating the document.

Let's discuss whether to impose restrictions on the table title length in the CDR OR to request the ability to have longer table titles on Cancer.gov.

I entered this as a Gatekeeper issue, but that may change if we decide to handle it in the CDR validation software.

For the sake of completeness and perhaps saving some time later...

If this ends up being something changed on the CancerGov side of the equation, the 255 character limit comes from Percussion. In the pdqTableSection content type, the table_title field is defined as 255 characters long.

Is this an issue we can mark as "On Hold" or should Erika coordinate work on it with the WCMS team?

Since Blair reported the 255 character limit comes from Percussion it may be worth checking if the Percussion upgrade addresses this limit. If there is no change we should probably put this issue on hold.

[Erika:] Need more information on how many instances need more than 255, and if so how many more characters are needed. Options include:
1. Updating Percussion to allow more characters (would need to investigate what the impact is to all titles)
2. Adding validation in CDR to limit users from entering more than 255 characters in the title. This requires some computation because the number of characters sent to cancer.gov after filtering may differ from the number of characters stored. (This is the option that the story points reflect.)
3. Leave as it is today, and deal with the small number of titles that go over 255 on a case-by-case basis

I went back to see which table had triggered this problem. It's currently Table 14 in the Genetics of Colorectal Cancer summary. The title is:

Table 14. Summary of Studies Evaluating Attitudes Toward, Interest in, or Intention to Use Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) for FAPa, LSb, and PJSa

The "a" and "b" are superscripted. We had originally spelled out the full name of each syndrome (e.g., Lynch syndrome as opposed to LS) but switched to the abbreviations to reach the required character limit.

I also checked to see if tables correctly display gene names on Cancer.gov and they do. See Table 2 in the Genetics of Breast and Ovarian Cancer summary: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/genetics/breast-and-ovarian/HealthProfessional/Table2

This is currently slated for the WCMS Bombay Release (go-live date: July 22, 2014)

This is now in production.

Verified in prod using the test summary doc and publish preview. I used a title of 290 characters not including spaces and extra characters added by the presence of inline markup tags (gene name and superscript).
