Per discussion we would like to test our copy of XMetaL 4.5 on Vista in the event that the NIH is switching the OS of workstations from XP to Vista.

We discussed this at our status meeting today and it turns out that there is a user at CIAT using XMetaL 4.5 and the CDRLoader on a Vista laptop.
In light of this I believe it won't be necessary to do more testing.

I'll have Sheri confirm the information and close this bug.

Correct. FYI - There were installation modifications that needed to be made to load XMetal 4.5, though.
Closing issue.

Following up on the email from Margaret (below), we discussed this issue in yesterday's (3/25/11) meeting and decided to re-open this issue.
I changed the title from "XMetaL 4.5 Testing on Vista" to reflect the correct OS.

Subject: issue to mention at CDR meeting today
Hello All,
I would like to have a discussion about Windows 7 and CDR compatibility today. It has now come up a couple of times and I think we probably need to address it. I know that Kim said that LM was getting new computers with Windows 7, but wouldn’t for the folks using the CDR. Diana got a new computer here that has Windows 7, and can’t use the CDR. I am concerned that as our computers get replaced, this is going to happen to others. If this has already been resolved, then it will be a short discussion!
Thanks,
Margaret

What is the version of Windows 7 that CIAT users would have installed?

There have not been any discussions at ICF/Z-Tech about switching operating systems that I am aware of but I have seen Windows 7 Ultimate in our software repository.

Oops! Sorry, I thought we were talking (in that email from Margaret) about CIAT upgrading the OS but it's actually the Lockheed group.
After talking to Bob I'm going to install the version that Diana is using since she seems to have a particular set of problems running Windows 7 that we'd like to fix. Diana is running Windows 7 Enterprise, 64-bit.

I'm still waiting for the installation key for Windows 7 from the infrastructure team before I can start.

I mentioned in last week's meeting that ICF will be replacing XP operating systems with Windows 7. It appears that currently new employees will be issued Windows 7 OS but XP will continue to be supported until the end of 2012. From what I know so far, we shouldn't run into any problems as long as we have administrative rights to the computer. I am putting in a request for a machine with Windows 7 OS for testing. I will report any issues I come across.

I am installing CDR on a laptop running W7 Enterprise Edition. I was able to install the Author without any problems but when I attempt to install the loader, the program runs on the console for a while (longer than on XP) and eventually returns the following results:
"2904 files(s) copied.
The system cannot find the file specified.
Finished copying CDRLoader Files
Press any key to continue"
Usually by pressing any key the CDR icon would be created on the desktop but not this time. The console disappears as usual and nothing happens. I tried to do a re-install but got the same error.

That's odd because there should only be a few files to be copied to setup the CDRLoader - certainly not well over 1000 files.
Have you double-checked the instructions:
http://bach.nci.nih.gov/cgi-bin/cdr/Filter.py?DocId=CDR0000000263&Filter=name:Documentation+Help+Screens+Filter
These instructions probably don't apply to the process at your office
but maybe it gives you a hint on what needs to happen?
One thing you may need to look out for is the fact that both, the
CDRLoader and XMetaL are 32-bit applications and need to be installed
that way, meaning they need to be installed in the "Program Files (x86)"
directory and not in the "Program Files" directory.

Thanks, the instructions did help. It is different from what we use. I had to manually copy some of the loader files. I got a few timestamp errors but it eventually let me connect. I may have to do one more installation to get the process straight.

If you want we could create a section in the documentation that's specific to your situation at CIAT. You could give me the instructions and I'll add them.

Are you referring to using the documentation document type? Actually, I can add it since I have done that a couple of times. But I need to be able streamline the installation process and update instructions before adding it online.

Alan had submitted an issue to the NIH's IT help desk regarding this and found out that the NIH has a site license for Windows 7. It is not clear though, if we're allowed to install it to a virtual machine.

After reading through this issue I'm not sure at this point what still needs to be done. The original issue was to identify if XMetaL could be installed on Vista. This did get resolved. Later, William re-opened the bug due to concerns that XMetaL may not work with Windows 7 but it had been identified that XMetaL runs fine as long as the user running XMetaL has admin rights.
We still have the OCECDR-3307 to eliminate the need to run XMetaL as
administrator.
What else is there that needs to be done for this issue?
